FAYE TEACHEY PREVATTE FOR REGISTER OF DEEDS 2008

I am chief assistant in the Register of Deeds Office in Pender County and have been employed in this office for 6 years. I have strong work ethics and a good working relationship with the staff .

I am the most senior member of the staff, when most counties employees are there for decades. There have been approximately 30 employees in the past 20 years that have gone through the Register of Deeds Office. Look at the lost resources in time and money spent training new staff only to have them leave after a year or two.

Most people do not know what the office of the Register of Deeds does. It is a recording office. We compile and maintain the history of Pender County and have since 1875. Deeds, maps legal documents of all kind, vital recordswhich includes births, marriages and deaths are all stored here. These records are extremely important and need to be taken care of. These records are the history of Pender County. Our vital records are in a fragile state and something needs to be done immediately if we want to save them. All records need to be scanned and a program implemented so that when certified copies are requested the original document does not have to be handled.

Technology is the key to taking care of our history and one of my greatest concerns. The Register of Deeds Office started using computers in 1990. That same program is being used today. That’s 18 years. Imagine how much technology has improved in 18 years. While we do have internet access the office is basically maintaining three different programs that could be consolidated into one saving the county a lot of money. There are many programs being utilities by other counties. Every time you initiate a new program you ultimately help someone in the county.

Pender County residents deserve the best technology available.

I would like to see the staff in the Register of Deeds Office better equipped to help the residence of Pender County as well the attorneys and paralegals that use the office on a daily basis. There are programs already in place in other departments that could be utilized in the Register of Deeds Office.

Staff morale is extremely important and a good working environment is the key. I want to work with the employees and have an office we can all be proud of.
